Therapist Chevy Chase MD

How to Make the Most Out of Your Therapy SessionsIf you have made the decision to get professional therapy, you should be proud of yourself. It’s brave to admit that you need help with certain aspects of your life. After you’ve found the right therapist, you’ll want to do everything to ensure that you are getting the most out of your time and money. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your therapy sessions.

Be Completely Honest

If you aren’t willing to be completely honest with your Chevy Chase MD therapist, you are only hurting yourself. No matter how embarrassing you think something is, your therapist has likely heard it before. A therapist is there to help you sort through your problems, not to judge you. In addition, your therapist has to keep everything you discuss private, unless you are a threat to yourself or others. Be as open and honest as you can about your emotions and thoughts.

Determine What Your Goals Are

Everyone has different goals they’d like to achieve in counseling. Some people may want to work on their anger issues while others may want to move on from a divorce. It’s important to figure out what your individual goals are. Once you know what you want to work on, you will know what to talk about during your sessions.

Don’t Expect Your Issues to Be Fixed Immediately

When you are dealing with an emotional or behavioral problem, it is understandable that you want to correct it as soon as possible. However, it is not reality. Working through various emotional and behavioral issues takes time. These problems can’t be resolved overnight. If you expect your issues to be solved after one session, you will just be more frustrated and upset.

Prepare for Your Sessions

To ensure each therapy session is productive, write down what you would like to talk about in a notebook. Jot down what you have been working on and if you’re stuck with anything. If you have any questions for your therapist, write those down to. If you write all of this information in a notebook, you will be less likely to forget about it.

Work on Yourself Outside of Therapy

Even when you are not in your therapy sessions, it is important to work on yourself. Think about the different suggestions your therapists provided you with and apply them. For example, if your therapist suggests you take a step back and take a few deep breaths whenever you get angry or upset, do just that.

Don’t Talk About Your Therapy Sessions with Others

Resist the urge to share what you discussed during your therapy sessions with family and friends. They may give you various opinions and criticism that may just confuse you.

If you follow these tips, you can make therapy a success. Always go in each therapy session with an open mind and trust your therapist with your deepest thoughts and feelings.
